Placement

Catalog apps (Store, package info) put search in the toolbar, start of the content column, with a clear affordance.
Searchable settings expose a search field in the window, matching row titles and descriptions.
Documentation search is global and keyboard-first (Ctrl+K).

Search filters as you type with at most ~120ms debounce; nothing network -bound runs per keystroke.
Empty results are a designed empty state with a “clear search” action.
Scope is visible: what is being searched (All packages / Installed / This section) is stated next to the field.
Filters compose with search and are visible when active (chips), with one obvious way to reset everything.
A search that navigates (documentation) highlights matches in results.
