Parch

Materials: radii, borders & elevation

Parch surfaces are quiet. Separation comes from 1px hairlines and surface color shifts first; shadows are reserved for things that truly float.

TokenValueApplies to

--radius-md10pxCards, inputs, images, popovers
--radius-lg14pxDialogs, large modals
--radius-window16pxApplication windows, mock frames
--border1px hairlineAll container separation
--shadow-cardsoft 24pxResting cards (subtle)
--shadow-raisedsoft 40pxHovered cards, dialogs, toasts

Rules

  • Nested radii follow the geometry: inner radius = outer radius − padding.
  • Borders and shadows never both on the same element at rest.
  • Dialogs and popovers are the only elements that may cast --shadow-raised at rest.
  • Hover raises by one step: surface → surface-2, or border-strong; no scale jumps larger than 2%.

Elevation in dark mode

Dark mode reads elevation through lightness, not shadow: background → surface → surface-2 get progressively lighter. Shadows still exist but are barely visible; do not compensate by darkening borders everywhere.
