Component ownership
The component map lists every Parch component and its repository. This page explains the process layer on top: how ownership works and how changes flow.
Ownership model
- Each repository has one or more maintainers, visible in the commit history and the org teams.
- Maintainers review PRs in their repos and decide merges.
- The core team coordinates cross-repo concerns (editions, releases, infrastructure) and has final say on RFC decisions.
- New maintainers are contributors with a track record; ask after sustained contributions (contribution workflow).
Change lifecycle
- Issue. Every change starts from a problem, written down: what breaks, for whom, and how to reproduce it.
- RFC (when cross-cutting). Changes touching more than one repo, or user-visible defaults, get an RFC in rfcs. The RFC names the problem, options considered, and the decision.
- Branch and implement. Feature branches in the component repo, small
commits, conventional messages (
fix:,feat:,iso:,pkg:). - Test locally. For installer/system changes: VM boot of both firmwares plus an install test. For theme changes: light and dark, LTR and RTL.
- Pull request. Description states the problem link and test evidence.
- Review and merge. Maintainer review; stricter for installer and boot-chain code.
- Release. ISO repos release by tag (CI builds automatically, see release automation); repo components flow through Void to world.
Review standards by area
| Area | Extra requirements |
|---|---|
| Installer (Calamares modules) | VM install test, both auto and manual partitioning |
| Boot chain (GRUB, SDDM, Plymouth) | BIOS and UEFI boot test; escape hatch reachable |
| ISO profiles | Full build + boot test; package list diff explained |
| System config (base-config) | Upgrade test from the previous version |
| Themes | Light and dark, LTR and RTL screenshots in the PR |
Security-sensitive changes
Changes touching the boot chain, installer, repositories, or anything with privilege escalation get a second maintainer review before merge. When in doubt, mark the PR and ask; see Security.
